Paul (Paul Giamatti), an unpopular professor at a New England prep school, must stay behind during Christmas break to babysit a handful of students who cannot return home. Without family or support to turn to, Paul forms unlikely bonds with two characters: intelligent but damaged troublemaker Angus (Dominic Sessa), as well as school head cook Mary (Da'Vine Joy Randolph), who suffered the tragic loss of a son during Vietnam.
